A fast-moving fire tore through a Sandy Springs apartment building Sunday night, knocking roughly half the units out of commission but, in a bit of good news, leaving everyone unhurt. Fire crews moved quickly to box the flames into a single apartment and part of the roof, yet about 15 households were suddenly without homes as officials began tallying the damage. The city’s fire marshal opened an investigation into what started the blaze, while property managers scrambled to line up temporary housing for residents.
According to WSB‑TV, firefighters were called to the Perimeter 5550 complex at 5550 Glenridge Drive around 7:45 p.m. Division Chief Jesse Bernard told the station there were no injuries and said crews focused on stopping the fire from jumping to neighboring units. WSB‑TV reported the building holds about 30 apartments, and around 15 of those will be unlivable for now while repairs and inspections are carried out.
11Alive also covered the late-night response, noting that investigators stayed on scene collecting evidence and speaking with residents as the evening wore on. The outlet’s report includes video and photos, credited to the Sandy Springs Fire Department, that show crews working around the damaged roofline.
Building and damage at Perimeter 5550
Public listings identify Perimeter 5550 as a low-rise apartment community on Glenridge Drive, and the complex’s posted amenities and unit counts line up with what WSB‑TV described. According to Apartments.com, the development’s layout and roof design help explain why firefighters zeroed in on keeping flames away from neighboring units and their balconies.
Help for displaced residents
Apartment management told WSB‑TV it is working to secure hotel rooms and other short-term lodging for displaced families, along with basic essentials while they are out of their homes. The Sandy Springs Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to release its findings once investigators finish their on-site work, and city officials urged residents to follow instructions from property managers and first responders.
Officials have not yet identified a cause and asked anyone with information about the fire to contact the Sandy Springs Fire Marshal’s Office, according to 11Alive. City and property officials said they will continue to post updates for residents as the investigation moves forward.
