Downtown Sanford is about to lose one of its late-night anchors, at least for now. Shantell's Just Until, the soul-food restaurant and lounge that has powered more than a decade of downtown nights, will close its doors after service on Friday, May 15, as owner Shantell Williams continues to recover from a serious March motorcycle crash in Daytona Beach.
Williams is calling it a pause, not a goodbye. She says this version of Shantell's is winding down so she can heal and come back with a new concept and a business partner, keeping her presence in Sanford's food scene alive, just in a different form.
As reported by WESH, the restaurant will be open Friday from noon until 3 a.m., one last marathon shift for regulars who have treated the place like a second living room. The celebration does not stop there. Williams is hosting a welcome home party Saturday evening at Blend & Barrel Cigar Bar on the lakefront.
Williams told the station she spent eight weeks in bed rest after the crash and “began walking again about 13 days ago.” While she was sidelined, family members and staff kept the kitchen humming so the community could still get its fix.
Crash and recovery
The crash happened during Daytona Beach Bike Week in March when, investigators say, a driver pulled into Williams' path, leaving her with serious injuries that required surgery and a long rehabilitation. ClickOrlando reported the collision occurred on March 4 near South Keech Street and West International Speedway Boulevard and that authorities arrested a 30-year-old driver who failed a field sobriety test.
FOX 35 described surgeons placing plates and rods in Williams' shoulders and quoted doctors who said her recovery could take months, a timeline that helps explain why she is choosing to reset the business rather than try to push through.
What's next for the Sanford staple
Williams told WESH that the forced downtime in recovery gave her space to rethink the business. She now hopes to reopen under a new concept with a partner sometime next month, keeping the spirit of Shantell's alive even if the format changes.
For now, Friday will function as both a finale and a reset button. Staff will finish out the scheduled service, then the doors will close while Williams focuses on rehab and planning the next chapter.
Legal note
Volusia County investigators charged the driver in the crash with DUI-related counts. ClickOrlando reports she faces three DUI-related charges and has prior driving-related offenses in county records. Williams has said she plans to be present in court as the case moves forward.
