On Tuesday night around 8:15 p.m., a two-vehicle collision outside WakeMed’s main entrance sent one car careening into the side of the hospital’s E-tower, leaving a black sedan lodged against the building. Two people were treated for minor injuries, and hospital leaders said core operations continued as usual while crews converged on the scene. The E-tower entrance was temporarily closed while first responders worked in the area.
According to WRAL, a WakeMed spokesperson confirmed the crash happened at the hospital's main entrance building and that two people were being treated for minor injuries. Crews from the Raleigh Police Department, WakeMed Police Department and Wake EMS all responded. The hospital said patient services were not impacted even as the front entrance remained closed for investigation.
Scene and response
Video from WRAL’s Breaking News Tracker showed a black sedan up against the structure with significant damage to both the front and rear of the vehicle, according to the station. "No one was seriously injured," an officer at the scene told WRAL. Raleigh police said the WakeMed Police Department is handling the investigation, and officials have not released what led to the crash.
Hospital operations and what to know
WakeMed’s Raleigh campus is the region’s largest hospital and includes a dedicated children’s emergency department and a Level I trauma center, according to WakeMed. Hospital spokespeople emphasized that patient care moved forward as normal while crews inspected the E-tower entrance and evaluated potential structural damage.
Authorities have asked anyone with information or video of the crash to contact Raleigh police as the investigation continues. WRAL reported it is working to learn whether any charges or citations will be filed.
