A Thursday night carjacking report in Severn escalated into gunfire, a crash, and a hospital stay after Anne Arundel County officers shot the driver of a vehicle they say had just been stolen. Police say the driver was hit in the shoulder, tried to keep going, then crashed and attempted to run before officers took her into custody. The suspect remains hospitalized, while the injured officer was treated and released. Authorities say the encounter began as a reported carjacking and that the investigation is still active.
How the confrontation unfolded
According to police, officers were called around 9 p.m. for a reported carjacking, then located the stolen vehicle about half an hour later near Reece Road and Route 170, as reported by WBAL NewsRadio. Investigators told the station the driver, a woman, struck an officer with the vehicle, which prompted officers to open fire. She was hit in the shoulder, but police say she continued driving until she crashed in the 8500 block of Pioneer Drive, then tried to flee on foot before being caught. WBAL NewsRadio reports that the suspect is still in the hospital and that the officer who was hit has been treated and released.
Severn on edge, stats tell a mixed story
Vehicle thefts and tense encounters have been a talking point in parts of Anne Arundel County, even as the broader numbers tell a more complicated story. The Anne Arundel County Police Department's 2025 end-of-year report says carjacking incidents dropped by about 53% compared with 2024, although other kinds of vehicle-related crime are still being examined. Residents in Severn have flagged a series of public safety concerns over the past few years, and police say they continue to maintain patrols in the area.
Who reviews the police shooting
Under Maryland law, the Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division typically examines officer-involved shootings that result in death or injuries that are likely to be fatal. Officials have not said whether that unit will take over this case, according to CBS Baltimore. For now, county detectives are handling the active investigation and have not released the suspect's name or said what charges, if any, have been filed. Authorities say more information will be shared once it is cleared for release.
