A 30-year-old man was killed late Friday when his SUV left the roadway and crashed in southeast Houston, marking another deadly night on East Orem Drive.
The single-vehicle wreck happened around 9:30 p.m. in the 6300 block of East Orem Drive. A witness told authorities the silver Nissan Rogue hit a puddle, then slammed into a curb. Houston Fire Department crews tried to save the driver but pronounced him dead at the scene. Police said he was believed to be the only person in the vehicle.
What investigators say
According to investigators, the SUV had been heading westbound on East Orem when it struck standing water just before the crash, then hit the curb. A witness reported they did not see whether the vehicle spun out after impact.
Police said another motorist stopped and called for help but did not render aid. The driver’s identity had not yet been released, and detectives stayed on scene late into the night gathering evidence and taking statements, as reported by Click2Houston.
East Orem's crash record and city plan
East Orem Drive has seen more than its share of serious crashes, and city planners have already flagged the corridor for safety upgrades in Houston’s Southeast Mobility Plan. The plan notes inconsistent sidewalks along the route and calls for targeted street changes intended to cut down on collisions.
Local coverage, including a March Hoodline report, highlighted a separate fatal wreck in the 7400 block of East Orem, underscoring a troubling pattern of deadly incidents along the stretch. City planners have floated street rebuilds and design changes to slow traffic and improve pedestrian access on East Orem, according to the Southeast Mobility Plan and a March piece on the East Orem horror crash.
Investigation and next steps
The Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division, which routinely handles traffic fatalities on major city corridors, is leading the investigation into Friday night’s crash and has overseen other recent East Orem cases.
In a March release about a similar wreck, the department urged anyone with video or information about serious crashes to contact investigators. As of Friday, officers had not released the name of the 30-year-old driver and said the case remained an active investigation, according to statements from the Houston Police Department.
