Houston police say a 21-year-old man is now behind bars, charged with murder in a deadly May 2 shooting at an apartment complex on South Glen Drive. The victim, 19-year-old Caleb Mitchell, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a breezeway and pronounced dead at the scene, according to investigators.
The suspect, identified by police as Gary Johnson, was taken into custody on May 27 and booked into the Harris County Jail. Detectives had previously circulated surveillance images of two people running from the area as they worked to track down those involved.
In a news release from the Houston Police Department, Homicide Division detectives G. Rangel and H. Montealegre are credited with handling the investigation, while the Westside Division Gang Unit developed the leads that put Johnson in handcuffs. Johnson is charged with murder in the 176th Criminal District Court. A booking photo was attached to the release, but officials did not include bond information or a court date.
Timeline and early reporting
According to early coverage in One Dead, One Injured, officers were dispatched to the 11715 South Glen Drive complex on the evening of May 2 after reports of gunfire. Initial reports said two people had been shot, with one person dying at the scene.
As word spread through the complex, witnesses and bystanders pulled out their phones, recording parts of the chaotic aftermath while detectives began the slow work of piecing together who pulled the trigger and why.
Investigation and charges
The Westside Division Gang Unit arrested Johnson on May 27 after follow-up investigative work and tips, according to the department. Authorities had released surveillance photos on May 4 through the Houston Police Department seeking help identifying two suspects, and those images remain part of the case file.
Investigators say one person shown in the earlier photos is still wanted, leaving at least one more name they hope to put on an arrest report.
What comes next
For now, Johnson remains in the Harris County Jail, charged with murder in the 176th Criminal District Court and awaiting the next steps in the legal process. Prosecutors and court schedulers will determine upcoming hearings. Police noted in their announcement that no bond amount or next court date was included.
