A pre-dawn crash at Venice Beach left four teenagers seriously injured earlier yesterday when a car slammed into the sail-shaped Venice Beach Pavilion. All four teens, including the driver, were rushed to area hospitals, and while the concrete pavilion stayed standing, nearby landscaping and a concession area took a hit. Authorities cleared the scene later that morning as investigators started sorting out how the early-morning wreck unfolded.
Police Response
Venice Police say officers were called to the pavilion area around 4 a.m. and found a single vehicle with four teenagers inside. All four were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries, according to FOX 13 News. Authorities told the outlet the car appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed before it hit the pavilion.
Historic Pavilion Stands
The sail-style concrete pavilion, a recognizable landmark at 101 The Esplanade S at the west end of West Venice Avenue, is listed on the city's register and remains structurally intact, the City of Venice notes. City documents and tourism materials describe the mid-century structure as a long-standing local icon that has been the subject of maintenance and preservation work in recent years.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials have not released information on what might have led to the crash or whether any charges will be filed. The Venice Police Department says the investigation is active and that updates will be released as they become available, per FOX 13 News. Local authorities have not yet provided additional suspect or witness details.
