Evan Longoria is about to get the full St. Petersburg hero treatment. The Tampa Bay Rays are turning Tropicana Field and the surrounding neighborhood into Longo country on July 11 and 12, capping a two-day "Longo's Legacy Weekend" with a Hall of Fame induction and the permanent retirement of his No. 3 jersey. The club is rolling the honors, giveaways and community events into one packed celebration for the player who helped define the modern Rays, including a closed community reading event tied to the team's youth literacy program.
Ceremonies, Giveaways and a Full Longo Takeover
According to MLB.com, the Rays will induct Longoria into the team Hall of Fame during a pregame ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, then officially retire his No. 3 jersey on Sunday, July 12, in the home series against the Seattle Mariners. The club will use specially branded "Longo’s Legacy Weekend" baseballs during play and is lining up commemorative freebies for the first 10,000 fans each day: a snapback hat on July 11 and a Longoria bobblecard on July 12.
The organization has also launched a dedicated Longo weekend hub and an interactive bracket that lets fans vote on their favorite Longoria moments, so the nostalgia can start well before first pitch.
Reading with the Rays Comes Full Circle
Longoria is also stepping back into one of his signature community roles. As reported by the Tampa Free Press, he will take part in a closed community reading at the President Barack Obama Main Library in St. Petersburg as part of the "Reading with the Rays" program he championed during his playing days. Sponsored by Suncoast Credit Union, the initiative encourages local students to log summer reading hours.
The Tampa Free Press notes that Longoria made roughly a dozen Reading with the Rays appearances between 2013 and 2017, using his star power to push literacy among kids across the region.
Music, Merch and an EDGE District Block Party Vibe
The party is not stopping at the Trop’s doors. Rock band Tantric, whose song "Down and Out" served as Longoria's walk-up music, will perform live at Tropicana Field, then head across the street for a postgame show at Ferg’s Sports Bar & Grill, according to MLB.com. Inside Gate 1, fans will find Longoria-themed chalk art, and a pop-up barbershop will be on hand offering Longo-inspired cuts.
The Bay Republic Team Store is stocking exclusive Longoria merchandise for the weekend, and organizers say the combination of in-park tributes and neighborhood events is designed to turn the Trop and the surrounding EDGE District into a multi-block celebration of No. 3.
Why Longoria Still Looms Large in Rays History
On the field, Longoria is still the face of the franchise record book. He was a three-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner, the 2008 American League Rookie of the Year and the 2009 Silver Slugger, and he remains at or near the top of many Rays career leaderboards, as noted by Sports Illustrated.
The Tampa Free Press quoted Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander saying Longoria "delivered countless memorable moments and helped establish a winning culture," which is the guiding logic behind turning an entire weekend into a formal tribute.
For tickets, a full promotional schedule and access to the Longo's Legacy hub, fans can visit the club's event page at RaysBaseball.com/Longo. With a Hall of Fame induction, a jersey retirement and a neighborhood-wide celebration crammed into two days, seats at Tropicana Field are expected to be in high demand, so Rays fans who want in on the Longoria sendoff will want to plan ahead.
