A three-alarm fire erupted Thursday around the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Wild Avenue in Staten Island, sending heavy smoke rolling over nearby blocks and choking traffic as fire crews rushed in. Neighbors reported thick plumes overhead and a sharp smell of smoke while firefighters worked to get control of the flames.
According to FDNY on X, the department classified the incident as a three-alarm fire and urged people in the area to avoid breathing in smoke and keep windows closed. The alert also warned locals to expect smoke- and traffic-related delays as operations continued on scene.
Crews battled the blaze as roads slowed
Fire units set up command posts and stretched hose lines as they hit the fire from multiple angles, attacking flames that sent visible plumes across the neighborhood. Similar multi-alarm blazes have struck Staten Island in recent weeks, highlighting recurring risks to air quality during large fires, according to coverage of an Ada Drive blaze that also hit three alarms.
How to limit smoke exposure
The FDNY alert urged residents to stay out of smoky areas and keep windows shut while crews operate, since smoke can aggravate respiratory conditions. To further reduce indoor exposure, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping doors and windows closed, running air conditioners on recirculation where possible, and using portable HEPA or other high-efficiency filters.
Officials had not released additional details about the fire's cause or any injuries at the time of the alert. This story will be updated as the FDNY and city agencies share more information.
