Pittsburgh woke up on the chilly side Tuesday, with mostly clear skies, temperatures near 43°F at dawn, and patchy frost clinging to sheltered, low-lying spots. Sunshine will take over quickly, melting the frost and sending afternoon highs into the low 70s on light southeast breezes. If you have potted plants or unprotected garden beds, give them a few more hours of protection before leaving them outside for the day.
Today’s Outlook and Overnight
A Frost Advisory is in effect through 8 a.m., with the coldest air pooling in hollows and river valleys before the sun warms things up. The high should land near 73 this afternoon, with generally light southeast winds.
Rain is expected to return late tonight into Wednesday morning, followed by a more organized round of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon. The stronger storms could bring wind gusts into the upper 20s and brief heavy downpours that make roads slick, according to NWS Pittsburgh.
Earlier Coverage
It has been a run of brisk wake-ups across the region. For background on the recent frosty mornings and how they have been affecting commuters, check out our earlier report on gray skies, gritty drives and the usual trouble spots for early frost and fog.
What to Watch Wednesday
Plan on wet roads and slower commutes Wednesday afternoon if your errands or outdoor plans overlap with the storms. Forecasters are watching for a possible lull between the overnight rain and the afternoon round, but the late-day line may still be gusty and spotty.
Secure loose outdoor furniture and umbrellas before the showers arrive, and avoid driving through standing water. If gusts reach the higher end of the forecast, crews could be called in to clear downed limbs. Gardeners should cover tender plants this morning and keep an eye on the forecast before deciding when to leave those plants outside later in the week.
Late-Week Flip
Once Wednesday’s front moves through, temperatures take a noticeable dive on Thursday, with highs only in the mid to upper 50s. That chill will not last long. A strong warm-up is on tap for the weekend, with highs in the mid 80s Saturday and Sunday and a push toward the low 90s by Monday as summer-like ridging builds in.
With a roughly 30° swing possible from Thursday to Monday, it is worth planning outdoor events and watering schedules now and checking for forecast updates as the pattern evolves through the week.
