Late Friday night in Jackson Heights, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in the back inside Travers Park, sending police into a search for two other teens and rattling a neighborhood that treats the park as a shared backyard.
What Happened
According to ABC7 New York, the stabbing happened just after 10 p.m. following a dispute between the victim and two other youths inside Travers Park near Northern Boulevard. Police said the 16-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. No arrests had been made, and the two suspects remained at large.
Where It Happened
Travers Park sits along 34th Avenue between 77th and 78th Streets and, as NYC Parks notes, it is a compact but heavily used neighborhood green space known for families, youth sports and community events. With its central location and steady stream of visitors, any violence there after dark tends to feel especially close to home.
Neighborhood Context
The incident comes on the heels of other youth-involved violence in Jackson Heights. Coverage by a March incident detailed how a 17-year-old was wounded nearby and how police launched a similar search for suspects. Local reporting has also highlighted a run of quality-of-life concerns along surrounding commercial corridors that residents say is feeding tensions among young people.
Police Response
Detectives are investigating the park stabbing, and officers were seen canvassing the area in the hours after the attack, police told ABC7 New York. Authorities are urging anyone with information, video or cellphone footage to contact law enforcement. The NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline is 1-800-577-TIPS, and tips can also be submitted online, per the City of New York.
