A late-morning shooting on Cleveland’s East Side left a 16-year-old boy wounded Thursday and a neighborhood staring at police tape and flashing lights instead of a quiet weekday routine.
The teen was shot around 10:30 a.m. on E. 108th Street and taken to a local hospital, according to Cleveland police. A heavy emergency response moved into the area as officers secured the scene and opened an investigation. As of Thursday afternoon, police had not announced any arrests.
Officers were called to E. 108th Street at about 10:30 a.m., and emergency crews transported the 16-year-old to a nearby hospital, Cleveland 19 News reported. Detectives processed the scene and the case remained under investigation.
Local prevention efforts
The shooting is the latest reminder for residents and officials who have been trying to curb gun violence, especially incidents involving teens, with a mix of public health and public safety strategies. Community groups and city agencies have pushed measures that range from street-level outreach to safer-storage programs intended to keep firearms out of the wrong hands.
As part of that push, Cleveland Public Library launched a pilot in May to hand out free gun safes and locks at three branches, a small but concrete step aimed at reducing accidental and unauthorized access to firearms.
Part of a wider pattern
Thursday’s shooting also fits into a broader pattern on the East Side in recent weeks. Cleveland 19 News previously reported that officers responded earlier this month to multiple ShotSpotter alerts after roughly 50 rounds were fired during an attempted carjacking. A 16-year-old was later hospitalized in a separate shooting that same night.
For neighbors, the drumbeat of gunfire incidents involving teenagers is becoming an all-too-familiar storyline, even as officials roll out new prevention programs.
