A North Philadelphia motorcyclist is clinging to life after slamming into a utility pole while trying to dodge a car that pulled an illegal U-turn in Tioga on Saturday afternoon, police said. According to investigators, the rider, on a Kawasaki sport bike, was heading southbound through the intersection of 17th Street and Allegheny Avenue around 2 p.m. when a car suddenly attempted the unlawful turn. The motorcyclist swerved to avoid the vehicle and crashed into a pole, suffering injuries described as extremely critical.
Police said the driver who triggered the chain reaction did not stick around to see the damage. The car took off before officers arrived, and detectives are now trying to track down the vehicle and its driver.
Police: Illegal U-Turn Led To High-Speed Crash
Police told NBC10 Philadelphia that the Kawasaki was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when the unknown car made the illegal U-turn, forcing the rider into an abrupt maneuver that ended with the collision against the pole.
The motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains in extremely critical condition, according to the report. Investigators say the fleeing car is a key piece of the puzzle and are urging anyone who saw the vehicle or the crash to step forward.
How To Help: Tips Line And Footage
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, witnesses or nearby residents who may have dash-cam, security, or cellphone video are encouraged to share it with detectives.
Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 215-686-TIPS (8477) or by using the department's online tip form. Police say even partial details, such as a piece of the license plate, the direction the car was traveling, or the exact time video was captured, can be crucial in identifying the hit-and-run driver.
Weekend U-Turn Crashes And Motorcycle Safety
The Tioga wreck came just one day after a deadly crash on Frankford Avenue, where a motorcyclist was killed when their bike struck a Subaru that was making a U-turn, according to FOX29. The two back-to-back collisions made it a grim weekend for riders on Philadelphia streets.
Statewide figures underscore how vulnerable motorcyclists are on the road. PennDOT reported 3,448 crashes involving motorcyclists in 2023, resulting in 238 fatalities.
The city's Vision Zero Action Plan notes that motorcycles account for a relatively small share of overall crashes, yet vulnerable road users make up a disproportionate share of deaths and serious injuries. Traffic safety advocates often point to risky intersection maneuvers such as left turns and U-turns as common factors in collisions involving motorcycles, a concern that loomed large over this weekend's wrecks.
