UTEP is betting big on campus life, breaking ground Thursday on Miner Crossing, a $102 million, five-story residence hall that university leaders say will finally put a dent in the school’s chronic housing shortage. The new complex is set to bring roughly 507 beds, a 22,000-square-foot dining hall, and a 1,350-square-foot fitness center to a site near the center of campus, with officials framing it as a key move to clear a four-year housing waiting list and welcome more students from beyond West Texas.
According to UTEP, the 155,500-square-foot Miner Crossing will sit on the north side of the track at Kidd Field and feature a mix of single- and double-occupancy rooms. The five-story hall is being pitched as a traditional freshman residence with integrated dining. The new dining facility will seat about 400 guests and is designed to serve more than 1,400 meals per day, giving students a built-in hub for food and socializing steps from their rooms.
As reported by KFOX14/CBS4, UTEP President Heather Wilson said Miner Crossing is intended to keep freshman housing affordable for students and families even as the university attracts more applicants from outside the region. Catie McCorry-Andalis, vice president of student affairs, said the residence hall’s central location will plug students directly into campus life, putting them within a short walk of the track, the Union, and many of their classes. KFOX14/CBS4 also noted that UTEP currently offers about 1,000 on-campus beds and has carried a housing waiting list for the last four years.
What’s Inside Miner Crossing
According to UTEP, the 22,000-square-foot dining hall will pack in 11 food stations, including a salad bar, deli, grill, pizza station, and ice cream bar, plus a full kitchen, bakery, and an allergen-free zone aimed at students with dietary restrictions. Study rooms and open nooks will be scattered throughout the building to give residents quieter spaces to hit the books.
The first floor will serve as an amenity level, with a gaming area, lounge, multipurpose room, and mailroom, creating what the university describes as a social core for residents. Students living in Miner Crossing will also have access to a compact fitness center equipped with cardio machines and free weights, giving them a way to squeeze in workouts without leaving the building.
Design, Cost, and Timeline
As reported by KFOX14/CBS4, Miner Crossing carries a $102 million price tag and was designed by Ayers Saint Gross, with Sundt Construction lined up as the builder. The exterior will echo UTEP’s distinctive Bhutanese architectural style, while landscaping by Ten Eyck Landscape Architects will rely on native Chihuahuan-desert plants. A breezeway is planned to connect the complex directly to Kidd Field.
University officials say construction is expected to take about two years, with Miner Crossing slated to open to students in the Fall 2028 semester. With UTEP currently housing roughly 1,000 students on campus and maintaining a housing waiting list for four years, the additional 507 beds are being treated as a priority for campus planners. Students looking for room assignment details or future updates are being directed to monitor the university’s housing page as the project moves from groundbreaking into full construction.
