Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau hit the industrial city of Vernon with a search warrant on Friday and say they walked out with roughly $4 million in stolen cargo. Investigators described the location as a stash spot where high-value retail and electronics shipments were parked for resale. One person was arrested and booked on suspicion of receiving stolen property under California law.
What detectives recovered
According to the sheriff’s department, the recovered haul was anything but subtle. Deputies listed nicotine pouches, televisions, shoes, printers, data-center cooling equipment, speakers and skin-care cosmetics among the items pulled from the site. The sheriff’s post named affected companies and suppliers, including Alp Drifter (nicotine pouches), Foot Locker, Epson, Deepcool, Renkus-Heinz and shipments tied to Medicube and Ulta Beauty. The department said it will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration, information that was shared by the LA County Sheriff's Department.
How the task force works
The operation was run by the Major Crimes Bureau’s Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team, known as Cargo CATs, one of several specialized units folded into the county’s Organized Retail Crimes effort. Materials from the unit explain that Cargo CATs’ mission is to track down cargo thieves and get stolen property back to its rightful owners. The team maintains a loss-report form and outreach process for victim businesses, and directs businesses or witnesses with cargo-theft information to email [email protected] or call (562) 347-1261, according to the unit’s information page from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Bigger trend in Southern California
The Vernon bust is part of a larger crackdown. Earlier this year, LASD detectives served dozens of warrants across Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties and recovered roughly $7 million in stolen freight in a separate multi-county sweep. Officials have said those multi-site operations, along with the latest Vernon warrant, are aimed at disrupting the resale and fencing networks that quickly move stolen goods through Southern California. The broader operation and task-force structure were detailed by NBC Los Angeles.
Tips and next steps
The sheriff’s department is asking anyone with information about the Vernon operation to contact the Major Crimes Bureau cargo team or call L.A. Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477). Detectives say evidence from the search is being processed while the case is prepared for review by the district attorney. For more detailed reporting guidance and Cargo CATs contact points, the department directs the public to its Cargo CATs information page from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Legal note
The arrested suspect was booked on suspicion of violating California Penal Code section 496, which makes it a crime to knowingly buy, receive, conceal or sell property known to be stolen. The statute allows either misdemeanor or felony charges, depending on the value of the property and case circumstances, and it permits victims to seek civil restitution.
