A family argument over a messy bedroom in Vienna Township ended with a father in handcuffs after his adult daughter told deputies he put his hands around her neck and cut off her breathing. Deputies later tracked the man to his workplace and arrested him. The suspect, 56-year-old Jeffrey Canzonetta, was arraigned and released on bond.
What deputies say
Deputies were called to a Vienna Township home around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday for a reported domestic disturbance, where they met the daughter who said her father had been "acting crazy" and had shoved her and her mother in a hallway, according to WKRC. The station reports the dispute began when Canzonetta walked into his daughter's room to comment on how messy it was and continued moving closer even after she repeatedly asked him to leave. Deputies say the daughter tried to call 911 before the alleged choking, and officers later located Canzonetta at his job and took him into custody.
Charges and court appearance
"She told law enforcement she was unable to breathe," the report states, and Canzonetta has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence, according to WKRC. He was arraigned Monday and released after posting a $7,500 bond, the report adds. Authorities have not released additional details about injuries or whether prosecutors might pursue enhanced charges.
Legal context
Domestic violence in Ohio is codified under Ohio Revised Code, and the offense can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the severity of the conduct, prior convictions, and other factors. A first-time incident that causes minor harm is often charged as a first-degree misdemeanor, while strangulation or repeated offenses can result in felony charges and steeper penalties. State law also directs courts to weigh prior domestic-violence history and the seriousness of the alleged incident when setting bail or filing enhanced charges.
