Ward Avenue is getting a fresh jolt of flavor. Two new dining concepts, Rigo and Āina Bowls, are slated to move into the ground-floor space at The Park Ward Village, a new Kakaʻako tower that is leaning hard into adding more places to eat. Rigo plans a second Hawaii location that is scheduled to open in May 2026, with a dedicated selection of Japanese soba alongside the Spanish-Italian fare it already leans on. Āina Bowls is lined up for its first island outpost in March 2027, bringing a lineup of açaí bowls, smoothies, and other health-forward options. Both spots will sit in the Park's street-facing retail frontage, part of the project's broader push to bring new retail and dining to the neighborhood.
As reported by KITV, the Park's ground-floor areas are intended to "liven up Ward Avenue," and project representatives are rolling out a lineup that leans heavily on food-focused tenants. James Otake told KITV the new Rigo concept is exclusive to Ward Village and "introduces menu items the neighborhood will love." The openings are framed as part of a phased rollout of street-level retail at the tower rather than a one-and-done debut.
Rigo already operates a Kapahulu location and is run by Japanese hospitality group HUGE; the operator's site lists the Kapahulu address and menu categories that span Spanish and Italian small plates along with "Soba Japanese," signaling a broader menu mix. The HUGE listing shows the Kapahulu outpost and menu details. The Ward Village version appears aimed at covering both quick lunches and evening dining for nearby residents as well as visitors.
Founder Shirley Lee said "Āina Bowls was born from the idea of creating a space centered around real ingredients, vibrant flavors, and community," a philosophy the concept is set to plug into the island's bowl scene. According to KITV, the shop will focus on fresh, health-focused items like açaí bowls and smoothies once it opens. The company is positioning Āina as a neighborhood-friendly stop for grab-and-go breakfasts and post-workout bowls rather than a linger-for-hours kind of cafe.
Retail Space And Neighborhood Impact
Developer filings list The Park Ward Village's retail footprint at roughly 26,800 square feet, according to The Howard Hughes Corporation's 2023 Form 10-K filed with the SEC. Marketing materials and buyer guides, however, often promote "over 30,000" square feet of ground-floor retail and dining; for example, a local buyer's guide highlights a larger combined figure. The difference reflects whether adjacent retail parcels are folded into those promotional counts, but either way the numbers point to a sizable new run of street-level businesses arriving in Kakaʻako. The Park's placement across from Victoria Ward Park is designed to guide park visitors toward Ward Avenue and give nearby residents more everyday food options within a short walk.
When To Expect Openings
Rigo's Ward Village outpost is scheduled to open in May 2026, while Āina Bowls is targeted for March 2027, setting up a staggered tenant rollout over the next year. Locals should start seeing build-outs and leasing signage in the coming months as interior fit-outs get underway.
For Kakaʻako, the arrivals highlight a developer push to activate ground-floor spaces with a mix of full-service and quick-service concepts, and they expand lunchtime and weekend choices for residents and visitors. Whether you are craving a new soba bowl or an açaí pick-me-up, The Park's incoming lineup looks ready to give Ward Avenue more reasons to slow down and stick around.
