Early Sunday on San Antonio's West Side, a two-vehicle crash at a busy intersection left one person seriously hurt and ended with police arresting a nearby suspect. The collision happened around 2:45 a.m. at Culebra Road and Bandera Road, authorities said, when a black Ram pickup struck another vehicle. Officers said the pickup's driver took off on foot but was later found and detained a short distance from the scene. Paramedics took one occupant of the struck vehicle to a local hospital with what officials described as major injuries.
According to News4SanAntonio, San Antonio police said two people were traveling eastbound on Bandera Road with a green light when their vehicle was hit by a westbound Ram traveling on Culebra Road. The driver of the pickup allegedly ran from the crash on foot and was later taken into custody. The station reports that the person arrested was booked on a charge of intoxication assault.
The intersection sits on a stretch of Culebra that state transportation planners have already flagged for safety upgrades. TxDOT has filed plans to widen FM 471 between Culebra Road and Bandera Road, part of a multi-year effort to add lanes, medians, sidewalks and bike facilities aimed at easing congestion and improving safety.
News4SanAntonio also reports that one occupant of the struck car suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and that the driver of the Ram was booked on an intoxication assault charge.
What Intoxication Assault Means Under Texas Law
Under Texas law, "intoxication assault" applies when a person who is operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, by accident or mistake, causes serious bodily injury to another person. The offense is generally treated as a felony, and penalties can increase in certain circumstances. As outlined in the Texas Penal Code, Section 49.07 sets out the elements of the crime and the potential punishment range.
Why This Matters Locally
Local coverage and crash data have repeatedly highlighted Culebra Road as a high-injury corridor, and officials say both engineering changes and targeted enforcement are part of the strategy to reduce serious wrecks. MySA has reported on the planned FM 471 widening and how those upgrades are intended to address long-standing safety and congestion problems on the Far Westside.
