Wilmington is saying goodbye to the man who reshaped its skyline. Mike Purzycki, the former mayor and architect of the city’s Riverfront revival, died on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. He was 80. State and city leaders quickly issued tributes.
Governor Orders Flags Lowered
Gov. Matt Meyer ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at half-staff through sunset on Friday, May 22, 2026, to honor Purzycki, according to the Office of the Governor. In a statement, Meyer called Purzycki "a tremendous leader and Delawarean" and offered condolences to Purzycki’s family.
Riverfront And Downtown Legacy
Purzycki is widely credited with turning a once-industrial stretch along the Christina River into the Riverfront, drawing hotels, restaurants, apartments and a new sports venue. He served two terms as Wilmington mayor, from 2017 to 2025, and chose not to seek a third term, as reported by Spotlight Delaware.
A Life In Public Service And Sport
Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1945, Purzycki was a standout receiver at the University of Delaware and briefly signed with the New York Giants before an injury ended his pro hopes. He later earned a law degree, served on New Castle County Council and spent about two decades leading the Riverfront Development Corporation, according to WHYY.
Mixed Record: Growth And Criticism
During his administration, City Hall touted substantial private investment and officials pointed to declines in shootings and homicides during parts of his tenure. Critics, however, argued that the downtown and Riverfront boom sometimes left neighborhoods behind and pointed to contentious policing changes and debates over rental code enforcement, as Spotlight Delaware reported.
Officials Remember Him
Across Delaware, current and former officials praised Purzycki’s vision and long public service. U.S. Sen. Chris Coons called him "a visionary," and former Gov. John Carney said, "I didn't have a big brother, but Mike came awfully close," according to WHYY.
Survivors And Arrangements
Purzycki is survived by his wife, Bette Richitelli, three children and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The obituary details were reported by the Delaware News Journal and republished by AOL, and officials say more information will be released as it becomes available.
