Six people, including four firefighters, were injured Thursday morning when a fire tore through a Riverdale high-rise, sending smoke over the neighborhood and drawing a massive FDNY response. Crews battled gusty winds as they attacked the flames and had the blaze largely under control in about an hour.
What Happened
Firefighters were dispatched to 5900 Arlington Ave shortly after 10 a.m. for reports of a fire on the eighth floor. Nearly 80 first responders answered the call and knocked down the flames in roughly an hour, according to News 12 New York. Video posted to the Citizen app showed ladder trucks stretched up the side of the tower as crews worked to douse the fire.
The Building
The blaze broke out inside one of the Skyview on the Hudson towers at 5900 Arlington Ave, part of a long-standing Riverdale co-op complex. Property listings describe the building as roughly 20 stories with more than 400 units, and note amenities like a doorman, an Olympic-size pool and a fitness center; see the building profile on StreetEasy.
Injuries and Investigation
Paramedics told News 12 New York that two residents and four firefighters were treated for injuries. Officials described the firefighters’ injuries as minor and said they are recovering. Fire marshals were on scene Thursday night to investigate the cause, and the FDNY noted that strong winds made putting out the fire more difficult.
