A 75-year-old man who was struck by a car while biking along Portola Road on May 1, has died from his injuries, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office announced yesterday. Deputies responded to the collision around 12:15 p.m., where paramedics found the bicyclist unconscious and rushed him to a nearby trauma center. The crash happened near the 1400 block of Portola Road at about 12:15 p.m., and paramedics initially found the cyclist unconscious but still alive, according to the Palo Alto Daily Post. Investigators told the Post that early findings do not point to alcohol or drugs as contributing factors, and that the driver cooperated with the investigation.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said its Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and continues to lead the probe. In a written statement, the office extended “its sincere condolences with the family, friends and loved ones of the cyclist,” according to The Almanac. Authorities are asking anyone with information about what happened to contact the sheriff’s office at 650-363-4911.
The bicyclist was hospitalized after the May 1 collision and later died, the Palo Alto Daily Post reported. The coroner’s office has not released his name while next of kin are notified. As of the sheriff’s announcement, investigators have not publicly announced any criminal charges related to the crash and say the Major Accident Investigation Team is still reviewing evidence from the scene.
Local Context And Safety
Woodside’s narrow, tree-lined roads are a magnet for recreational and commuter cyclists, and serious crashes in the area are not unprecedented - a bicyclist was killed in a separate collision at the Four Corners intersection in August 2025, The Almanac reported. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office also uses public outreach to highlight bicycle-safety guidance, including giving cyclists at least three feet when passing and staying off phones and other distractions behind the wheel.
Anyone who witnessed the May 1 collision or has additional information is asked to contact the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office at 650-363-4911. The loss is a heavy one for the cyclist’s loved ones and for Woodside’s tight-knit riding community, which now waits on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
