Atlanta is waking up to a warm, muggy start at Hartsfield‑Jackson, where it is mostly cloudy and about 72°F, and the atmosphere is only getting busier from here. A Flood Watch is in effect for the Atlanta metro from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. EDT on Monday, June 8, 2026, with repeated thunderstorms expected to drop heavy, slow‑moving rain that could trigger urban and flash flooding. Forecasters say the most intense storms are likely to line up with the late‑morning through early‑evening commute.
Timing And Rain Threat
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to ramp up through the late morning, with the widest coverage and heaviest downpours roughly between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Across much of the metro, new rainfall totals of a quarter to a half inch are possible, while localized bands of storms could unload 1 to 3 inches where cells repeatedly track over the same spots. The Flood Watch includes large portions of the metro; according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, excessive runoff may lead to flooding in low‑lying and poor‑drainage locations.
Commute And Events
Afternoon and evening drivers should be ready for slow traffic, ponding on low‑lying streets and scattered delays on both transit and major roadways. If you have outdoor plans, consider moving them inside or at least keeping a close eye on the sky, since frequent lightning and brief gusty winds are possible with the stronger storms. Avoid driving into flooded roads, turn around and do not drown, and build in extra time if you are heading out for work or any evening events.
Who To Watch And What To Do
Residents who live near creeks, underpasses or in neighborhoods with poor drainage, including parts of Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Gwinnett counties, should keep tabs on local alerts and be ready to protect basements or belongings stored on lower levels. Make sure phones are charged, emergency alerts are enabled and you are prepared to change plans quickly if Flood Warnings are issued.

This unsettled setup did not come out of nowhere. We first flagged the wet pattern in earlier coverage of weekend storm chances; see Sunny Start Turns Stormy in Atlanta Monday for added context. This story will be updated if the Flood Watch is upgraded or if expected timing and impacts shift.
