
Austin ISD Police Chief Wayne Sneed was seriously injured Wednesday night in a motorcycle crash in south Austin while escorting a district official, authorities said. Sneed appeared to have been struck by one of his own officers during the escort and was taken by ambulance to a hospital with serious injuries.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, the collision happened at about 8:30 p.m. on June 3. Austin police investigators responded to the scene and described the incident as under review. The Statesman reported that officials expected to provide updates as more information becomes available.
Who Is Chief Wayne Sneed
Sneed was named Austin ISD's police chief in 2022 and is the district's first Black chief, according to Austin ISD. He has been with the department for more than a decade and previously led its mental health and community engagement unit.
Motorcycle Unit And Duties
The district launched a motorcycle unit in 2024 to help speed response times and provide perimeter security at campuses and district events. As reported by FOX 7 Austin, Sneed helped oversee that rollout as the department expanded its motorcycle program.
