Two downtown San Diego blocks turned into crime scenes today as police launched parallel homicide investigations, one following an overnight stabbing and another after an early morning death less than a mile away.

In the first case, officers were called just after midnight to C and Union streets near the San Diego Central Courthouse, where they found a man in his 30s or 40s suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died, according to NBC 7 San Diego. Police said both incidents remained under active investigation and did not immediately say whether the two deaths were connected.

The two crime scenes sat about a mile apart, one at C and Union streets and the other near 13th and F streets by the East Village Green construction site, NBC 7 San Diego reported.

Surveillance cameras captured the C Street attack, and detectives were looking for a man in dark clothing last seen walking along C Street near Front Street, according to NBC 7. SDPD Lt. Joel Tien said trolley service near the scene was temporarily restricted due to the investigation but later resumed. A small stretch of C Street was shut down to traffic while officers worked the case, though operations at the Central Courthouse were not affected.

Second Scene Near East Village Green

The second investigation began around 5 a.m. at 13th and F streets in the East Village neighborhood. City officials have described East Village Green as a multi-block park project, bounded in part by 13th and F streets, that has added construction activity to the area, according to a release from the City of San Diego.
