Book lovers in Baltimore are getting a sequel they actually wanted: Barnes & Noble is heading back to the city, with plans for a new store in Harbor East. The national bookseller is set to reclaim a spot on the waterfront, its first Baltimore city location since the chain shut down its Inner Harbor store in 2020.
According to the Baltimore Business Journal, Barnes & Noble has signed on to a Harbor East storefront, although the company has not yet shared an exact opening date or the store’s square footage.
Back on the waterfront, but skipping the Power Plant
The Harbor East location will bring Barnes & Noble back to Baltimore’s waterfront after the chain closed its longtime Power Plant store at the Inner Harbor in August 2020. The Daily Record reported on the Power Plant closure and noted that the company cited the site’s large size and high operating costs.
Part of a national expansion
The Harbor East move lines up with a broader growth push from the chain. Barnes & Noble has announced plans to open roughly 60 new stores across the United States in 2026 as it leans into events, cafes and neighborhood-focused layouts. Time Out reported on the 2026 expansion plans and the retailer’s shift toward smaller, locally programmed store formats.
Why Harbor East?
Harbor East’s blend of offices, hotels, housing and steady waterfront foot traffic has made it a prime target for ground-floor retail that can pull in daytime workers, local residents and visitors. The neighborhood’s programming and events calendar reinforces that mixed-use appeal, as reflected in the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore listings and recent leasing activity in the area.
For now, details on the store’s size, programming and opening timeline are limited. The Baltimore Business Journal reports that neither Barnes & Noble nor the Harbor East property managers have released specifics. Expect more clarity when the retailer and landlords file formal documents and roll out official announcements.
