Authorities in Hillsborough County say a violent dating dispute in Brandon escalated into a gunpoint attack that left a 17-year-old facing a long list of felony charges and his girlfriend in the hospital.
Investigators allege the teen held his girlfriend against her will, assaulted her with a handgun and threatened to kill her and members of her family. The victim survived with non-life-threatening injuries, and detectives say they later recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the assault.
According to the Tampa Free Press, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested 17-year-old Jai’Keen Barlow after an investigation that began on Wednesday, June 24. Investigators say Barlow pulled a handgun, refused to let the victim leave, repeatedly choked her, struck her with the firearm and took her phone so she could not call for help. She was treated at a local hospital.
Deputies say Barlow was already on juvenile probation for prior felony firearm offenses. In this case, he faces multiple counts that include armed kidnapping to harm or terrorize, armed false imprisonment, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, battery by strangulation, tampering with a witness, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and seven counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Officials, Evidence And Victim Resources
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports that detectives recovered the firearm used in the alleged assault and arrested Barlow on June 24. The agency has publicly stressed that it will continue to pursue domestic violence cases aggressively.
For anyone facing abuse at home or in a relationship, the Sheriff’s Office points to confidential support services, including The Spring of Tampa Bay’s 24/7 crisis hotline at (813) 247-7233, as outlined by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say that if someone is in immediate danger, they should call 911.
How This Fits A Local Pattern
The case lands in the middle of a tense stretch for Brandon when it comes to kids and guns. Just days earlier, deputies responded to a June 18 disturbance at Brandon Mall where, according to investigators, two teens tossed an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun while running from law enforcement. That incident, detailed by FOX 13 Tampa Bay, highlighted how armed juveniles have been turning up in busy public spaces.
Sheriff Chad Chronister has previously said the agency intends to hold juveniles accountable when weapons are involved, a stance that now looms large over this latest alleged dating violence case.
Legal Implications
One of the standout counts in this case is the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to the Florida Senate, Florida Statute 790.23 makes it unlawful for people convicted of qualifying felonies to possess firearms or ammunition, and it generally classifies the offense as a second-degree felony. Penalties can increase if prior offenses or other factors apply, which means the allegations in this case could carry significant prison time if they are proven.
For now, the arrest and charges against Barlow remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Detectives and prosecutors say they plan to release additional updates as interviews wrap up and charging decisions are finalized.
Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
