A midday crash at a busy Brooksville intersection turned deadly Monday when a 74-year-old local woman was fatally injured after her SUV collided with a pickup on State Road 50, officials said.
The wreck happened around 12:20 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 50 and Lockhart Road. Investigators said the woman, driving a Honda CR‑V north on Lockhart Road, entered the path of an eastbound Ford F‑250 on SR‑50. The pickup, driven by a 35-year-old man from Spring Hill, struck the SUV. He suffered minor injuries and did not need to be taken to a hospital, while the CR‑V driver was transported for treatment and later died.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol told WFTV that the crash remains under investigation.
Rescue Crews Set Up Helicopter Landing Zone
Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and set up a helicopter landing zone as crews worked to extricate an occupant from the wreckage, the agency said, according to Tampa Bay 28. Eastbound lanes of Cortez Boulevard were shut down while air support and ground crews operated, and drivers were warned to expect delays in the area.
SR‑50 Corridor Has Been Flagged For Improvements
The stretch of State Road 50 running through Brooksville, including the area near Lockhart Road, has already been on transportation planners’ radar. The corridor has been identified in FDOT planning documents as a location with multiple serious crashes clustered around key intersections.
Local planners and residents have also raised concerns about development pressures and growing traffic along SR‑50, arguing that more cars and trucks on the road are turning it into a higher-risk corridor, according to Bay News 9.
Troopers told WFTV that authorities have not yet released the victim’s name. No charges have been announced while investigators work to reconstruct the collision and interview witnesses.
