A Saturday night Knicks celebration inside a Canoga Park condo ended in screams and cellphone cameras when an LAPD officer shot and killed a family dog in the hallway, leaving its owner sobbing on the floor as neighbors looked on. Relatives say the party had just hit a high note over the New York Knicks’ championship win when the dog slipped out of the unit and ran into officers outside the door, setting off a chain of events that residents later blasted as needless and tragic.
Officers Responded To A 911 Call At Jordan Condominiums
According to FOX 11 Los Angeles, the dog's owner, Marie Marseille, said she tried to secure her dog, Jamison, in another room before the animal slipped past her and walked toward an officer in the hallway. That is when, she told the outlet, the officer opened fire. FOX 11 reports that video of Marseille wailing over her dog’s body has been viewed more than two million times. The shooting took place at the Jordan Condominiums at 7551 Jordan Avenue, and FOX 11 notes that LAPD had not responded to its requests for comment at the time of publication.
ABC7 Los Angeles reports that officers went to the building after a neighbor called 911 about loud voices and a possible domestic dispute. The station says the department’s account is that the dog rushed at officers. ABC7 identifies the animal as "Jameson," describing it as about 2 years old and a mix of golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle, and shows a photo of the dog wearing a New York Knicks shirt shortly before it was killed.
"We were just so happy. We were just so happy. We were f------ celebrating the Knicks," a voice says in video from the scene, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. In the hours that followed, neighbors turned the hallway into a makeshift memorial, leaving flowers and handwritten notes, while others in the footage can be seen angrily confronting officers. The viral clip has fueled a heated online back-and-forth over when officers should reach for a firearm around animals in crowded residential spaces.
Marseille told FOX 11 Los Angeles that Jamison was neither baring his teeth nor barking and was not acting aggressively before the shot was fired. In the video, neighbors can be heard demanding explanations from police. FOX 11’s coverage includes raw smartphone footage that neighbors say captures the immediate aftermath in the hallway.
Across Los Angeles, police shootings involving pets have become a simmering point of public frustration. In April, NBC Los Angeles reported that an LAPD officer shot and killed a dog during an encampment cleanup after the animal allegedly bit workers. That report notes that investigators are reviewing body-worn camera video and witness statements to determine whether the officer’s actions followed department policy. Officials have stressed that officers try to avoid shooting animals and say deadly force is used only as a last resort when someone’s life is believed to be in danger.
The Canoga Park shooting is now part of that broader citywide debate over how police handle encounters with pets and respond to welfare checks that begin with a 911 call and end with gunfire. This story will be updated if the department issues a public statement or investigators release findings about what happened in the hallway at Jordan Condominiums.
