A massive unsanctioned gathering at Discovery Green ended in chaos Saturday night after gunfire erupted while Houston police were breaking up a crowd of an estimated 500 to 600 people, authorities said. As officers started dispersing the group, the first shots rang out, sending pockets of the crowd sprinting into nearby downtown streets. No civilians or officers were reported injured, but police said they detained one juvenile and one adult who were found with firearms. Investigators stayed at the park into the early morning hours working to determine who actually pulled the trigger.
Police response and detentions
According to Click2Houston, officers were called out at about 9:23 p.m. and arrived to find hundreds of juveniles and adults packed into the downtown green space. The Downtown Division and Patrol Support Division joined the response, while captains coordinated extra manpower by phone and rapid mobilization units were requested from stations across the city. One juvenile male and one adult male were detained near the area where shots were fired and were found carrying firearms, police said, adding that both would likely be taken downtown for further investigative work.
Why 'teen takeovers' have drawn scrutiny
The Discovery Green flare up fits into a trend local officials have been tracking this spring. So-called “teen takeovers” are social media organized mass meetups that have sometimes spiraled into fights, property damage and heavy law enforcement responses. FOX 26 Houston reported that roller rinks, malls and other venues across the region have tightened rules, enforced curfews and beefed up security in recent weeks to try to head off similar events. Businesses and public safety agencies say the sudden appearance of large, unsanctioned crowds can quickly strain both staff and officers who are trying to clear people out without letting tensions boil over.
Shots fired, crowd dispersal and ongoing probe
Police said the first round of shots came from a large crowd across the street while officers were in the middle of dispersing people. About 10 to 15 minutes later, a second burst of gunfire was reported, prompting more than 100 police units to surge toward the area, according to authorities. No injuries were reported, and an investigative division is assisting with the case, Click2Houston noted. Officers stayed on scene for several hours, taking witness statements, dispersing the remaining groups and helping detectives gather video and other evidence.
HPD said its rapid response helped prevent any incidents at the nearby FIFA Fan Fest, which was also drawing large crowds downtown. Detectives are asking anyone with video or information about the gunfire to contact investigators. For now, visitors can expect to see more officers around major public watch sites as authorities keep an eye out for similar pop up gatherings. This story will be updated as officials release more details.
