A routine day on the water at Oologah Lake turned tragic Monday morning when a Claremore man was found dead not far from his empty boat, authorities said.
The victim was identified as 71-year-old Robert Johnson of Claremore. He had been reported missing before emergency crews launched a search on the lake. His boat was discovered sitting in a cove near Will Rogers Cove, and search teams later recovered his body roughly 50 yards from the vessel, officials said.
According to KOKH, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said troopers with its Marine Division joined the Northwest Fire Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the search effort at Oologah Lake, eventually locating Johnson's boat in Will Rogers Cove. The outlet reports that Northwest Fire recovered Johnson and that authorities have not yet explained what led up to the incident. The Rogers County Sheriff's Office initially received the missing-person report, the article notes.
Search site and lake details
Oologah Lake lies east of the town of Oologah and stretches across Nowata and Rogers counties. It is a heavily used recreational reservoir that operates under a mix of state and federal oversight. Per the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers runs the lake's campgrounds and boat ramps and maintains visitor facilities throughout the area.
Boating safety in perspective
Johnson's death comes against a backdrop of ongoing safety concerns around recreational boating. Drowning remains the leading known cause of death in boating incidents nationwide. The U.S. Coast Guard's 2023 Recreational Boating Statistics report found that when cause of death was known about three-quarters of victims drowned, and that most of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. Alcohol use and smaller vessels are frequently cited as contributing factors.
As reported by KOKH, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has not released additional information, and the case remains under investigation. This story will be updated if authorities provide further details.
