A Clayton County father will spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury found him guilty of killing his wife inside their Ellenwood home while the couple’s children were in the house.
Jurors convicted Johnnie Alston of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of third-degree cruelty to children. A judge sentenced him to life without the possibility of parole plus five additional years, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. The conviction followed a multi-day trial that walked jurors through testimony, Alston’s own admissions, and investigators’ evidence.
Prosecutors said Alston later admitted to shooting his wife and wrote an apology letter addressed to the couple’s children and the victim’s family. Authorities said he left the scene, went to a local gas station, and checked into a motel before he was arrested on Jan. 3, 2023, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The Shooting And The Scene
Police said the shooting happened around 10 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2022, at the family’s home in Ellenwood. Officers arrived to find 45-year-old Alicia Alston outside the residence; she later died at a hospital.
Two children ran into the master bedroom after hearing gunfire and saw their mother bleeding, authorities told WSB‑TV. Clayton County police then obtained warrants and moved to arrest Alston in the days after the shooting.
Trial, Testimony And Aftermath
During the trial, Alston took the stand and urged jurors to consider a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. Jurors later said his own testimony ended up being a key factor in their decision to convict him, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Georgia Judge Aaron Mason presided over the case and imposed the life sentence plus five consecutive years. District Attorney Tasha M. Mosley, whose office prosecuted the case, praised the team that tried it and said she hopes the guilty verdict offers the family at least a small measure of peace after an unthinkable loss.
