A Philadelphia police officer directing traffic after Wednesday night’s Philadelphia Phillies game was hit by a vehicle and taken to a nearby hospital with a leg injury, according to police. The department has not yet released the officer’s name or other specifics.
Philadelphia police told CBS News Philadelphia the officer was struck while working traffic detail near the South Philadelphia sports complex, then transported for treatment. The outlet posted a short video from the scene that shows emergency crews and police cars, but offers only limited additional details.
Scene Near Citizens Bank Park
The collision happened in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex area outside Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies’ ballpark, according to MLB.com. On game nights, crowds spill out onto Pattison Avenue and nearby ramps, creating a postgame traffic crunch that makes officer-directed traffic both routine and risky, since police often have to step into active lanes to guide drivers.
Officer Safety And Crowd Control
Responder-safety groups and law-enforcement publications have repeatedly flagged how hazardous it can be for officers to manually direct traffic at busy events, urging the use of high-visibility gear and clear lane controls to cut down that risk, as Police Magazine notes. Local coverage has also documented similar incidents in South Philadelphia, including a 2025 case outside Lincoln Financial Field that left officers hurt while they were working crowd control. FOX 29 reported from that earlier crash that drivers who bypass barricades and lane controls can put officers squarely in harm’s way.
CBS News Philadelphia reported that investigators had not immediately released any further details about Wednesday night’s collision. This story will be updated as authorities provide more information.
