A Newburgh man is behind bars after allegedly trying to "purchase" a 12-year-old girl from an undercover detective in Dauphin County, according to charging documents. Prosecutors say the 53-year-old, identified in court papers as Leonard Bakker, exchanged sexually explicit messages and set up a meeting as part of the investigation. The case took shape late last month after a tip to a county tip line prompted investigators to dig in.
Charging documents reviewed by Local21 say Bakker sent roughly 15 sexually explicit messages, wrote "I am a child rapist," and asked for revealing photos of "all assets available to purchase." Investigators say an undercover detective offered $500 for a 12-year-old and arranged a meeting, and police allege Bakker agreed to meet at noon on May 29. Authorities say a nude photo the suspect sent was compared with New York law enforcement photos to identify him.
Regional sting activity provides context
Law enforcement agencies in Central Pennsylvania have been running multiple online predator operations this month, with a multi-agency investigation called "Operation Wrong Place" leading to several arrests in mid-May, according to Daily Voice. Officials say those stings are designed to target buyers as a way to disrupt human trafficking networks and head off further exploitation.
Charges and next steps
According to charging documents and Local21, prosecutors have filed 23 counts against Bakker, including human trafficking, prostitution, rape of a child and unlawful contact with minors. Online court records show he was arrested May 26, and the affidavit in the case says he agreed to meet the undercover detective on May 29 "under the impression he is purchasing the child."
Why the tip mattered
Dauphin County Crimestoppers received the initial tip that someone was seeking girls aged 10 to 12 and passed the information to investigators, prosecutors said. The Dauphin County DA's CrimeWatch site lists contact options, and Crime Stoppers of Dauphin County publishes a tip number for anonymous reports. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The alleged victim's identity has not been released, and the charges are allegations that must be proven in court. Court calendars and filings will provide updates as the case moves through the Dauphin County criminal justice system.
