North Texas is waking up to a soggy start today, as light rain falls across Dallas with temps hovering near 75°F and a breezy south-southeast wind. That is just the opening act. Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected through the day, with the heaviest bands moving in tonight into Sunday morning, increasing the risk of ponding on roads and nuisance flooding in low-lying neighborhoods.
Flood Watch In Effect
The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has a Flood Watch in place for much of western North Texas from 7 a.m. today through 4 p.m. tomorrow. According to NWS Fort Worth, excessive rainfall could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying or flood-prone locations. Residents who know their areas tend to flooding are urged to be ready to act quickly if Flood Warnings are issued.
How Much Rain And When
Forecasters expect a round of showers and thunderstorms this morning, a relative lull in coverage through the afternoon, then a fresh batch of storms redeveloping this evening until tomorrow. New rainfall totals today are generally forecast in the half-inch to three-quarters-of-an-inch range, with similar additional amounts possible overnight. Where storms repeatedly move over the same spots, localized totals could end up much higher.
The Flood Watch and forecast discussion both point to the potential for isolated pockets of very heavy rain, mainly from this evening until tomorrow morning, that could trigger rapid, localized flooding.
What This Means For Plans
The most immediate threats are pooled water on streets and flooded low-water crossings. The usual rule applies: never drive through standing water and avoid walking through flooded streets, no matter how shallow they look. Expect wet and possibly slow commutes this morning and again late tonight until tomorrow. If you live in a low-lying area or a neighborhood with poor drainage, be ready to move to higher ground and keep an eye on local alerts.
Looking Ahead
Once this system finally moves out tomorrow afternoon, North Texas flips the switch back to summer. Warmer and drier weather returns next week, with highs climbing into the mid 90s by next Monday and pushing into the upper 90s later in the week. Heat index values could top 100°F. Keep checking updated forecasts and any Flood Warnings overnight, since official alerts will have the most current timing and details on local impacts.
