Dallas residents paying their water bill with a one-time card or phone payment are now getting tagged with a 3.15% processing surcharge after the city shifted accounts to an upgraded billing platform. The extra charge kicks in immediately for certain payments made through DallasGo and the automated phone system, and it is already drawing fire from customers who say the fee quietly appeared with almost no warning.
What Changed And Who Pays
According to Dallas Water Utilities, a 3.15% convenience fee per transaction is being assessed by the payment processor on online credit-card payments and one-time payments made on DallasGo or through the automated phone system. City officials say the fee covers processor costs, and they stress that customers who re-enroll in AutoPay using an eCheck, pay by mail with a check or money order, or pay in person at City Hall will not see the surcharge.
Why The Charge Showed Up
The new fee arrived alongside an upgraded billing software system that plugs directly into DallasGo. In a rollout detailed in a City Manager memo to staff, officials said the platform went live on May 18 and noted that the older billing system will not be supported beyond 2026. The memo lays out the timeline, a customer-transition plan, and the public-education campaign that was supposed to help get people ready for the switch, along with staff contacts for questions and troubleshooting.
Customers Push Back
Local reaction was swift. As reported by The Dallas Morning News, readers told the paper they felt blindsided by the extra cost. One tipster, Jack Bush, told the columnist that "the fee and poor communication made people mad," summing up the mood among customers who discovered the surcharge only after checking their bill.
How To Skip The Fee
The city has laid out several no-fee options for anyone looking to dodge the 3.15% hit. Customers can set up AutoPay with an eCheck using their bank routing and account numbers, mail in a check or money order, or pay in person at Dallas City Hall. There is also a night deposit box on the east side of City Hall in the driveway between Young and Canton Streets for checks and money orders. The city specifically warns customers not to leave cash in the drop box. Step-by-step tutorials and FAQs are listed on Dallas Water Utilities' DallasGo page.
