Downtown Decatur’s food scene is getting a new all-day player as pop-up veteran Henryk Kumar trades in his roaming setups for a permanent home on Church Street. His latest project, Dan’s Snack Bar, is slated to take over the former Mother’s Best Fried Chicken space on Decatur Square, with an opening targeted for August 2026.
New Tenant at 406 Church Street
The storefront at 406 Church Street has officially changed hands and is set to be rebranded as Dan’s Snack Bar, according to Atlanta Business Chronicle. The deal gives Kumar the green light to transform the space, building out both service and kitchen areas in one of the most visible corners of the square.
From Pop-Ups to Brick-and-Mortar
Per reporting by WhatNow, Kumar, who has run pop-ups such as Dank’s Deli and helped operate Butter & Cream, is planning a breakfast-to-dinner concept with an all-day menu that leans into inventive sweet-and-savory dishes. The outlet notes that the space comes in at roughly 2,000 square feet and already includes a to-go window, and that Kumar is looking for a coffee partner to round out the build-out.
What Happened to Mother’s Best
Mother’s Best Fried Chicken opened in December 2024 and operated for about a year and a half before shutting down its brick-and-mortar location, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The paper notes that the restaurant posted on social media about suffering “a few catastrophic equipment failures” and announced it would continue as a pop-up while the Decatur space was sold.
Decatur Square Context
The incoming restaurant will plug directly into the reshaped core of downtown Decatur. City officials recently finished an $8.5 million renovation of Decatur Square ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding more green space, a performance stage and other upgrades aimed at handling bigger crowds and more events, according to 97.1 The River.
What to Expect
Dan’s Snack Bar is being pitched as a flexible, approachable spot that can handle both quick bites and sit-down meals. The existing to-go window is expected to play a big role in serving the square’s steady daytime foot traffic, WhatNow reports. Kumar is aiming for an August 2026 opening, with build-out, permitting and staffing plans set to move forward as tenant improvements take shape.
