State Study Flags Chronic Safety Issues On U.S. 290
Transportation planners and safety advocates have long warned that U.S. 290 is a high-crash corridor. A TxDOT traffic study documented nearly 13,000 crashes along study sections of the route from 2019–2023 and highlighted intersection-related collisions and speeding as major concerns, according to TxDOT. Local monitoring groups have also tracked multiple traffic deaths in Austin this year, including incidents on other stretches of U.S. 290, Vision Zero ATX reports.
Fitzhugh Area Has Seen Trouble Before
The Fitzhugh Road intersection has been on safety watchers' radar for months. In March, an Austin ISD bus was sideswiped at U.S. 290 and Fitzhugh Road. Four students on board were not hurt, but a person in the other vehicle was taken to a hospital, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
Hospital Transport And Ongoing Investigation
ATCEMS said the surviving adult from Monday's crash was transported to St. David's South Austin with minor injuries. The facility is listed as a full-service hospital serving the south side of the city, according to St. David's South Austin Medical Center.
Authorities have not released the names of those involved or any information about how the collision occurred. Police and traffic investigators typically follow up with formal crash reports, and agencies may release additional details as the case develops.
