Last Saturday, a late-morning ride in Waterford Township ended in tragedy when a 64-year-old local man died after his motorcycle struck a deer on Hospital Road near Pershing Street, authorities said.
Witnesses told police the bike was traveling northbound when it collided with the deer and came to rest in a wooded area. First responders were called to the scene at around 11:15 a.m., and the rider was treated on-site before being taken to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he later died. Police have not released his name, according to ClickOnDetroit.
Deer crashes are common in Michigan and nationwide
Animal strikes are a frequent hazard on U.S. roads. The Insurance Information Institute says drivers filed an estimated 1.8 million animal-collision claims between July 2022 and June 2023, and researchers have long estimated roughly 1.5 million deer-vehicle crashes each year.
Michigan sees more than its share of those encounters. Data from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning show the state recorded more than 58,000 deer-involved crashes last year, with many clustered from October through December, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
Why motorcyclists are especially vulnerable
Unlike drivers wrapped in steel and airbags, motorcyclists are largely exposed and are overrepresented in traffic fatalities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports there were 6,228 motorcyclist deaths in 2024 and urges riders to wear DOT-compliant helmets, use high-visibility gear and avoid riding while impaired.
Safety experts and insurers also stress that swerving to dodge an animal can be more dangerous than hitting the brakes and holding your line. Braking firmly and maintaining control is generally safer than a sudden maneuver that can cause a more serious crash, a point emphasized by State Farm.
Investigation
The Waterford Township Police Department is continuing to investigate the collision. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at about 11:15 a.m., and the rider’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family, ClickOnDetroit reports.
Officials are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact local authorities.
