Lucas Stedman, 48, was arrested this week in Brevard County after deputies say he shot a cat in the eye with a high-powered BB gun earlier last month, killing the animal. Stedman is charged with aggravated animal cruelty, and his bond is set at $50,000. The case has drawn sharp condemnation from sheriff’s officials and animal advocates along the Space Coast.
According to WKMG ClickOrlando, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested Stedman and described the shooting as intentional. Booking records and the sheriff’s social media post list the charge as aggravated animal cruelty and confirm the $50,000 bond.
Sheriff’s account
In a video posted to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Sheriff Wayne Ivey laid out the allegations and said Stedman acted because the cats “didn’t get along.” Ivey said, "He decided that it would be a good idea to shoot a cat in the eye with a high-powered BB gun and kill the cat," calling the act senseless and unnecessary. The sheriff’s video was used to publicly announce the arrest, and the office’s post includes the department’s account of how the case unfolded.
What the charge means
Under Florida law, aggravated animal cruelty is a felony when an intentional act results in an animal’s cruel death or causes serious suffering. Prosecutors can pursue third-degree felony penalties and, in some cases, ask judges to prohibit a convicted person from owning animals in the future. The crime is defined in Florida Statute 828.12.
Enforcement trend in the county
The sheriff’s office has been putting a spotlight on animal-cruelty arrests in recent months as part of a very visible enforcement push. Local coverage has followed multiple recent cases, including arrests in a separate investigation where a dog was allegedly starved, which has kept animal-welfare enforcement in the headlines. See Space Coast Daily for one example.
Stedman remains in the Brevard County Jail on the bond amount listed by deputies as the investigation continues. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges, and the sheriff’s office did not immediately provide additional details, according to WKMG ClickOrlando.
