Detroit woke up to wall-to-wall sunshine today with a cool and clear start near 66°F before a steady southwest breeze began to ramp up. By this afternoon, those same winds will help send temperatures into the upper 80s, setting up one of the warmest days compared with the rest of the upcoming week.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Southwest winds are expected to run around 6 to 15 mph this afternoon, with gusts pushing into the mid 20s and near 30 mph around parts of the metro. The Saginaw Valley and Thumb could see even stronger local gusts. That breeze will nudge highs toward about 88°F, but it can also turn tents, umbrellas, and other lightweight outdoor gear into a headache, so secure loose items if you have outdoor plans, according to the National Weather Service Detroit.
Late Night Storm Window
A cold front will slide south today, dragging in a broken line of showers and embedded thunderstorms from late evening into early Sunday, roughly between 11 p.m. today and 4 a.m. tomorrow. Forecasters say there is a narrow window for isolated strong to briefly severe storms, with damaging wind gusts possible. Most locations should see only a few tenths of an inch of rain, although areas that get hit more than once could pick up over an inch.
Marine Concerns
A Small Craft Advisory is posted for parts of Saginaw Bay and the Thumb into Saturday evening, so small-boat operators should be ready for choppy water and gusty conditions.
Sunday And Beyond
Showers and thunderstorms are most likely Sunday morning into early afternoon, with cooler highs near 74°F and lakeshore spots running a bit cooler still. The pattern settles down next Monday into Tuesday before another round of storms moves in around midweek, so keep an eye on updated forecasts if you have plans later next week.
How To Plan
Have an indoor backup ready for any outdoor events planned for this evening, and keep weather alerts enabled on your phone after sunset. If you are driving during any heavy downpours, slow down and give yourself extra stopping distance. Boaters should hold off on trips until winds ease and waves calm down.
