A dispute over a wrong order at a Detroit restaurant allegedly spiraled into a chaotic and bloody attack that left a 23-year-old worker in surgery and two sisters facing serious felony charges, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors say the confrontation unfolded last Saturday and culminated in the worker being beaten with pots and pans, threatened with death, nearly doused with hot grease and stabbed in the stomach. The sisters, 26-year-old Kierianna Long and 29-year-old Brianna Long, were arraigned Tuesday in 36th District Court.
Court records show both women are charged with multiple felonies, including assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felonious assault, and that both entered not guilty pleas, according to Metro Detroit News. Magistrates set Kierianna Long’s bond at $100,000 cash or surety and Brianna Long’s bond at $25,000 cash or surety, court filings show. In court, defense attorneys pushed back on the prosecution’s account and said the worker threw items first, including knives, according to their statements to judges.
Food-service workers face heightened risk
While the case is extreme, workplace assaults against public-facing employees are a known occupational hazard, and food-service staff are among those identified as being at higher risk for violent incidents. Federal research and analysis, including work by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, has found that food-service and drinking places report comparatively high rates of non-robbery-related violent incidents, according to NIOSH/CDC. Safety specialists say measures like de-escalation training, clear procedures for handling disputes and safer counter layouts can help keep a heated complaint from turning into a physical confrontation.
Prosecutors say attack turned physical inside the restaurant
Prosecutors allege the argument escalated when the sisters forced their way behind the counter and began striking the employee with pots and pans, chasing the worker through the dining area and threatening to kill them, according to Metro Detroit News. Officials say one sister then allegedly stabbed the employee in the stomach.
Authorities also say the suspects tried to throw hot grease on the worker’s head. The victim ran out of the business and hid in a stranger’s vehicle before being taken to the hospital, where they underwent surgery, according to prosecutors. Witness statements and court filings are expected to play a central role as detectives and attorneys sort through how the confrontation unfolded.
Defense and what comes next
Defense lawyers insist key details remain in dispute and say investigators will need to work through conflicting witness accounts to determine who initiated the altercation. One attorney told the court that Brianna Long is pregnant. Both defendants pleaded not guilty and were released on the bonds set by the magistrate where applicable.
Their cases will move through standard 36th District Court procedures, which could include preliminary examinations, additional hearings and further arraignments as prosecutors decide whether to bind the matters over for trial.
