What started as a routine Thursday in Durham County libraries turned suddenly tense when staff were told to dismantle Pride Month displays on the spot. Workers at multiple branches say they were instructed mid-shift to pull LGBTQ+ materials, leaving both staff and patrons stunned, if not outright furious.
According to The News & Observer, Durham County Public Library Director Dana Conners emailed branches ordering that all LGBTQ+ materials be taken down "effective immediately," citing recent federal action and executive orders. County leaders say they only found out after a worker's post about the removals surfaced online. Within hours, the Durham County Board of Commissioners told staff to put the displays back up.
Staff Say They Were Blindsided
In a post that quickly spread among locals, a library employee described staff being told to strip shelves of Pride materials right in front of patrons, leaving LGBTQ+ workers feeling "alienated and betrayed," according to a Reddit thread that circulated Thursday night. Comments and replies show residents and library workers pressing county leaders for answers and immediate fixes.
County Leaders Back Away From the Call
Durham County communications officials told The News & Observer that the removal order was not "directed by the Board of County Commissioners, the County Manager, nor the County Attorney" and that the board has not adopted any policy banning Pride displays. The paper also noted that the board pulled county funding for the county's Pride parade last year, a move that has only heightened concern among LGBTQ+ advocates. County officials say they are now working to restore displays and tighten up guidance for staff.
Context: Pride Programming And New Leadership
The whiplash reversal landed against a backdrop of official Pride programming. Durham County's Equitable Well-Being office lists Pride Month events, including library programming, on the county website. County meeting notes also show that Dana Conners was introduced as the library director on Jan. 5, 2026, meaning the takedown order arrived early in her tenure and under newly installed leadership.
What Happens Next
For now, Pride displays are supposed to be restored, and county leaders have promised clearer direction for library staff. Community advocates and workers say they plan to keep pushing for transparency about who approved the takedown in the first place and how similar episodes will be avoided going forward.
