A bike ride on Cleveland’s East Side turned terrifying for a 10-year-old boy when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of East 131st Street and Corlett Avenue, police said. Emergency crews took the child to a hospital for treatment after the crash, and officers said the driver kept going instead of stopping. The Cleveland Division of Police’s Accident Investigation Unit is now running an active investigation into the collision.
Officers responded to the scene around 9:03 p.m. According to WKYC, police told the station the motorist had a green light when the boy entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. The driver reportedly continued driving after hitting the bicycle, and detectives are now looking for witnesses or any video that could help identify the vehicle and whoever was behind the wheel.
What the law says
Under Ohio law, leaving the scene of a crash that causes injury or death falls under ORC 4549.02. Penalties can range from a first-degree misdemeanor to felony charges depending on how serious the injuries are, according to the Ohio Revised Code. The statute also requires drivers involved in collisions on public roads to stop, exchange information and stay at the scene, or notify police if an injured person is not able to record the driver’s information.
Local context

In 2024, a collision in nearby Elyria that killed a 9-year-old and left a 10-year-old critically injured after two boys on bikes were struck sparked renewed calls for traffic-calming measures and sidewalks, as reported by News 5 Cleveland.
