Most of Palmetto went dark Sunday night after a large tree toppled onto a transmission line along Collinsworth Road, cutting electricity to homes and many businesses and triggering a small brush fire. City crews and firefighters spent hours securing the scene while utility workers moved in to assess and repair the damage. Officials also opened local cooling sites and the community center so residents had somewhere powered and safe to ride out the outage.
According to WSB-TV, the tree came down across transmission lines along Collinsworth Road and knocked out service to “most residential and many commercial areas” of the city. Palmetto’s Electric, Fire, Police and Public Works departments responded, quickly putting out a fire sparked by the downed lines. The outage had stretched to at least six hours by the time the station published its update. In a social-media post, the city added that Georgia Power crews were working on “extensive” repairs to the damaged transmission line.
Where Residents Can Go for Relief
The Palmetto Community Center at 595 Main Street is listed on the city’s meeting packets and event notices as a key public facility, and Chattahoochee Hills City Hall at 6505 Rico Road has been identified in municipal materials as an available cooling site. The community center address appears in a City of Palmetto meeting packet, while the cooling site information, location and contact details for city hall are included in Chattahoochee Hills city materials.
Who Is Repairing the Damage and How to Report Outages
Georgia Power’s Outage & Storm Center explains how crews prioritize safety and restoration and urges anyone who spots damaged or downed lines to call 1-888-891-0938 or dial 911. Local Coweta‑Fayette EMC, which maintains an outage-reporting page and lists a Palmetto headquarters on Collinsworth Road, directs customers to report interruptions at 770-502-0226 or through the EMC outage map. Residents are advised to stay away from any downed wires, follow instructions from emergency personnel on scene and wait for official confirmation that lines have been made safe.
Next Steps and Updates
Channel 2 Action News said it contacted a city spokesperson for additional information and plans to update coverage as officials release restoration timelines, according to WSB-TV. For now, crews remain at the scene, and residents are being urged to keep an eye on local advisories along with the outage maps maintained by their utility providers.
