A neighborhood dispute in Pittsburgh's Fineview section turned into a gunfight Tuesday, leaving two men wounded near the 1700 block of Belleau Drive and sending both to the hospital. One man was struck multiple times and rushed to a hospital in critical condition, while the second suffered gunshot wounds to his lower body and was taken to a separate hospital. Police at the scene jumped in with first aid before medics arrived.
Police Say Belleau Drive Dispute Escalated Fast
According to WTAE, Pittsburgh Public Safety said officers responding to the 1700 block of Belleau Drive found the two men already shot and moved quickly to stabilize them. Officers applied a tourniquet on scene until EMS could take over, the outlet reports. One victim was transported in critical condition, and the other was taken to a different hospital for treatment. Detectives with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police have launched an active investigation into the shooting.
Officers Used Life-Saving Training On Scene
The city's Public Safety materials note that bureau officers receive training to provide life-saving care in the field, including tourniquet application and the use of hemostatic dressings, while they wait for EMS to arrive. Officials say those skills have already saved lives in past incidents. Pittsburgh Public Safety has documented the training and equipment upgrades on its site, and those same protocols were put to use Tuesday as officers worked to keep both men alive until ambulances could transport them.
Violence Has Haunted This Fineview Block Before
Belleau Drive and the neighboring Allegheny Dwellings complex have seen gunfire before, fueling long-standing safety worries along the North Side hillside. Past coverage has detailed earlier shootings on the block, including a 2016 incident that left one person dead, as reported by WPXI. City officials and community leaders are rolling out summer violence-prevention efforts in response to recurring incidents, including deploying "violence interrupters" at pools and youth sites to try to keep arguments from turning into armed confrontations, according to WESA.
Detectives Canvassing Fineview, Asking Public For Tips
The investigation remains active, and so far, police have not announced any arrests. Anyone with information or video from the area is being urged to contact Pittsburgh police, WTAE reports. Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood and pulling nearby surveillance footage as they work to piece together how a Tuesday argument on Belleau Drive turned into yet another shooting on the hillside. Authorities say they plan to release additional details as the case develops.
