A late-night car meet in Philadelphia’s Frankford section turned chaotic early Sunday when a marked police cruiser was hit and several drivers bolted from the scene, according to investigators. Officers were called out around 1:15 a.m. to G Street and Ramona Avenue to break up what police say was a large gathering, with dozens of vehicles and onlookers crowding the area. Investigators report that one vehicle struck a police cruiser with two officers inside, then took off. A second car allegedly tried to hit a police lieutenant but missed. Police said no officers were injured, and there were no arrests by the time the first reports went out.
According to 6ABC, investigators moved in to disperse the crowd and began collecting statements and evidence at the intersection. The outlet’s coverage echoes police accounts that one car hit the cruiser and a second vehicle later attempted to strike a lieutenant. 6ABC also noted that officers were not hurt and that there were no immediate arrests.
Police Step Up Fight Against Rogue Car Meetups
The incident comes as city police have been tightening the screws on unsanctioned car gatherings in recent years. The Philadelphia Police have increased street patrols, including the use of an Elite Highway unit, to deter illegal ATV use and unauthorized car meetups. Officials say those efforts followed a string of chaotic unsanctioned gatherings across the region that at times ended in arrests and injuries.
Investigation Ongoing
Investigators told 6ABC that the case remains under investigation as they review video from the scene and interview witnesses. Police have not released descriptions of the vehicles involved, and the department has not announced any charges connected to the early-morning encounter.
