Fruita is shelving its traditional July 3 fireworks show this year, trading booming pyrotechnics for a high‑tech drone display and a whole lot of free ice cream.
Citing elevated wildfire risk, the city will shift the celebration to July 2 at Civic Center Park, where a choreographed drone show will cap the Thursday Night Concert. The money that would have gone up in smoke is being reallocated to free Enstrom's ice cream, T‑shirts, beach balls, and glow sticks for the crowd.
Drone Show Replaces Fireworks
The city announced the pivot on June 22, saying “prime wildfire conditions” made a traditional fireworks show a non‑starter. As reported by the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, officials lined up a drone show to close out the July 2 Thursday Night Concert, billing it as a dual celebration of Colorado’s 150th and the nation’s 250th anniversaries.
Ammon Pierce, the city’s events coordinator, told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, “We’re getting a little bit more ice cream from Enstrom's, and we’re going to be able to give away, just, tons of swag.”
The city said the fireworks display had been budgeted at about $33,000, while the drone show contract comes in around $24,750. The difference is being funneled into giveaways and extra programming, which is probably the most Fruita way possible to handle cost savings.
What To Expect At Civic Center Park
KKCO lists Hazel Miller & The Collective as the July 2 headliner for Fruita’s Thursday Night Concert, with music starting at 7:30 p.m.
The city’s RFQ posted on BidNet lays out the plan for a fully choreographed drone light show to wrap the concert at Civic Center Park. Think synchronized lights in the sky instead of smoke and fallout drifting over town.
Why Cities Are Swapping Fireworks For Drones
Across the West, cities are increasingly opting for drone shows in the face of drought, wildfire risk, and a growing preference for quieter celebrations. Larger municipalities in particular have leaned into drones as a safety‑minded and pet‑friendlier alternative.
Salt Lake City is touting a major drone display this season, while neighboring Grand Junction is still planning a Lincoln Park fireworks show for July 4, contingent on weather and fire conditions, according to Grand Junction Parks and Recreation.
The Fruita concert and drone show are free to attend, and the city says giveaways will be handed out while supplies last. For any last‑minute changes, check the City of Fruita event calendar on GoFruita before heading to Civic Center Park.
