Authorities say a neighborhood fight in Galliano turned into a near-fatal stabbing, leaving one man airlifted to a New Orleans hospital and another in jail on an attempted murder count.
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says the victim, a man in his 40s, was stabbed during a confrontation and initially taken to a nearby hospital, then flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans for treatment. The suspect was later stopped and taken into custody in neighboring Lockport, according to WWL‑TV.
Investigators identified the suspect as 39-year-old Chad Lachney. He was booked on attempted second-degree murder and a drug charge and is being held on $550,000 bond, WWL‑TV reports. The station says the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office released a custody photo of Lachney after the arrest.
How deputies say the fight unfolded
Deputies with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office say Lachney went to a man’s home on 190th Street in Galliano and challenged the resident to a fight. During the confrontation, authorities say, Lachney stabbed the man in the arm and torso. The wounded man was taken to a local hospital and later flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans for further treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.
Arrest and booking
After the stabbing, deputies pulled Lachney over on LA‑308 in Lockport and arrested him at the scene, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish detention complex on the attempted second-degree murder and drug counts, and court records listed his bond at $550,000, the agency reported.
What the charge could mean
Attempted second-degree murder is prosecuted under La. R.S. 14:27 and 14:30.1, and under the state’s attempt statute, a conviction can carry decades in prison when the underlying offense is punishable by life. Appellate decisions have upheld long prison terms for attempted second-degree murder, including sentences in the decades-long range and terms up to 50 years at hard labor. For statute text and case law, see Justia and a 2019 appellate decision on Justia.
Lachney's booking is an accusation, not a conviction, and the case will move through magistrate court before the District Attorney’s Office decides on formal charges. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.
