A Greensboro police officer who investigators say was driving more than twice the speed limit without lights or siren is now facing criminal charges after a late-night crash that killed a passenger last month. High Point crash investigators say the marked patrol SUV, driven by 25-year-old Officer Haley L. Maeurer, slammed into a turning vehicle on East Cone Boulevard, and 35-year-old passenger Xavier T. Crosson of Climax later died from his injuries on May 16. Maeurer has since resigned from the Greensboro Police Department, and the case is still under active investigation.
Investigators' findings
Investigators with the High Point Police Department’s Traffic Unit have charged Maeurer with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and speeding, according to a press release from the High Point Police Department. A reconstruction of the May 3 crash found that Maeurer was driving 76 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone, and that the patrol SUV’s emergency lights and siren were not activated when it hit a vehicle making a left turn at the North O’Henry Boulevard intersection around 2:30 a.m.
High Point police said their investigators spent weeks examining physical evidence, reports and other data before filing charges, and noted that the probe remains open.
Victim, department response and resignation
The passenger who later died was identified as 35-year-old Xavier T. Crosson, according to the High Point police release. In a statement quoted by The Charlotte Observer, Greensboro Police Chief Kamran Afzal framed the situation as a serious test of public trust, saying, “We understand the gravity of this situation and the importance of accountability.”
The Charlotte Observer also reported that Maeurer has “voluntarily resigned” from her patrol position with the Greensboro Police Department following the crash.
How the crash was first reported
Local outlets first covered the May 3 collision shortly after it happened, reporting that three people, including Maeurer, the other driver and a passenger, were taken to hospitals after the Greensboro patrol SUV hit a car that was turning left. Early reports noted that the High Point Police Department would take over the crash investigation at the request of Greensboro police, a sequence later confirmed in the High Point department’s formal release. Initial details were reported by Spectrum News.
Charges and next steps
Maeurer now faces two charges, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and speeding. The High Point Police Department lists the case report number as 2026-12065 in its release and says the investigation is active. Officials say additional information will be shared when appropriate as investigators complete their work and any potential criminal proceedings move ahead.
