Construction work in Port Orchard came to a halt Tuesday after crews uncovered human remains at a job site, triggering a swift, coordinated response from multiple law enforcement agencies. Port Orchard officers and detectives moved in to secure the area while search teams spread out to examine the surrounding property. Investigators recovered the remains and said there is no ongoing risk to the public as they continue to comb through the site. Work at the location was temporarily paused while crews worked alongside officers.
According to KIRO 7 News Seattle, the Port Orchard Police Department said in a Facebook post that workers discovered the remains and officers "responded to investigate." The department reported that the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, the Kitsap County Search and Rescue Team and K9 units joined in an extensive search of the area before the remains were recovered, and that the investigation is still underway.
Investigators Lock Down Site, Credit Search Teams
In a brief Facebook statement, the department wrote, "We thank the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and the Kitsap County Search and Rescue Team and K9s for their assistance," as reported by KIRO 7 News Seattle. Detectives have not released any details about who the remains might belong to or how the person died, and they have not provided a timetable for when forensic work at the site could be finished.
Port Orchard Has Seen This Kind Of Case Before
Port Orchard has faced similar discoveries in recent years. Kitsap Daily News reported that "skeletonized" remains were located in the city in March 2024, and archived Kitsap Sun coverage shows that bones turned up at a South Kitsap construction site in 2009 and were later connected to a homicide investigation. Those earlier cases highlight how excavation work can unexpectedly expose old remains and how these investigations can stretch out while evidence is carefully analyzed.
What Residents Should Know
Police continue to stress that there is no danger to residents and are asking anyone with information about the case to contact Port Orchard authorities. This story will be updated as officials release additional details.
